The brief calls for a design which is modern yet depicts the rich history of the Indian Architecture. The museum design has an abstract form which draws its inspiration from historical Indian architectural principles while building façade incorporates use of computational techniques to parametrically control façade perforations.
Design Concept
The concept is based on the idea of the Navagraha or nine houses i.e. principle of mandala for ancient Indian architecture.
The built form draws on traditional Indian Construction principles of stacking individual elements, producing a coherent and legible hole through the collection and compression of diverse and unique elements.
The vertical surfaces with maximum sunlight exposure are protected by solid curving brick walls with opening on the side to allow access to sunlight. The brick walls have perforations formed through rotation of the bricks at certain areas of the wall which forms patterns of shadow and light and also allows cool wind to pass through.
The overall idea of the gallery design is to make a person actually feel that era of architecture by recreating some of its elements. The circulation of the gallery follows a top to down approach.
The visitor first moves from the ground floor to top floor where he experiences the very beginning of Indian Architecture. The gallery recreates the experience of Rock cut architecture, Hindu/Buddhist architecture and Islamic Architecture followed by Colonial, Modern and Present day architecture on the Second floor. The galleries on the first floor discover the possibilities of the use of traditional Indian architecture techniques to shape the present and future architecture of India.
